Like Marius, I haven't seen this style of hammer-side before. I'm intrigued by it.

My understanding is that axes weren't used as weapons during the Qajar period. Thus most axes made then were...

If you search for "wonderful multi-bladed African spear" you get a crazy looking thing that is...well, not that similar...previously offered on Ashoka Arts. But it's a spear with multiple points. I'd...

Clearly meant to be some sort of mancatcher, though the central blade makes the person caught somewhat dead as well.
The leather below the lumpy gray materal looks African to me as well.
But the...

Mameluke-hilted swords were a bit of a fad in the early 1800s in Europe, possibly because of French campaigns in Egypt. ...and I probably shouldn't say fad, since there are western military units...

Very pretty pieces, and as Ian says, showing a lot of lovely patterning.

I'm particularly fond of the half-waved kris form (rantai I believe it's called), so I'm envious.

Interesting piece, Hefezola. The way the scabbard is held together is unusual to my eye; I've seen many instances of wrapping all the way around the sheath, but not around little inset areas. But it...

I keep thinking how old everyone seems, till I realize I'm right up there with them at 50. How did I get so old?

Nice, kronckew. Looks like a thick and useful blade, unlike my zaghnal which is surprisingly delicate.
I have another zaghnal which is rather similarly made, but doesn't qualify for this cut steel...

Nice one. I like the carving on the spine of the blade and the thickened edge.

Is the grip made of bone, or ivory? It looks very smooth and white, which makes me think bone, but I'm no expert.

Late period would be nice, rather than a made-for-ebay special. I'm looking forward to hearing what others have to say about it.

Should I assume that I'm entirely correct that this is a fake, for exactly the reasons I mentioned?
Are there any other tell-tale signs I should be aware of in the future?

Based on initial impression and some image searches, I'd put this as Italian Baroque period in style.
If you search for Flintlock alla Fiorentina, you see similar stuff.

What does it say on the...

The guard appears to be made with pieces of flat metal stock welded together, and the peg in the hilt matching into the hole in the guard looks like it's made for easy mass assembly. Along with it...

Nice examples!

Those are some elegant long spikes on the front, and great to have one with the horsehair intact.

The small one doesn't have any metal guard or even any holes where one would...

Suspect Firanghi for comment

Here's a firanghi I've had for some time. I'm a little suspicious of its authenticity.

The reinforcements that fit over the blade fit perfectly, as if they're...

I found one item in my collection that has some figural carving, so here's a photo. The carving is fairly crude and heavily worn, so not exactly a beauty piece.

And thanks for the explanation of...

I can't see any evidence of drags in the circled photos Mahratt posted, leaving me a little confused on terminology. I know in some cases the term "drag" is used interchangeably with the whole chape....
