I appreciate the welcomes and the responses to my questions.

To Vandoo: about the replaceable spearheads and shafts, that's something I never knew before but that actually makes a lot of sense. A lance is not something one would want to leave behind after striking a single opponent. On that note, what about javelins? I know we've all seen the Rohirrim using them in LotR but is that true to life? I would think so since you could probably get that much more range with the added momentum from propelling it on horseback.

To Fernando: I was sure that was how it worked for infantrymen too however, I am wondering if the scope of my question is appropriate for this forum because I'm not sure if its rooted in reality or not.

I'm not sure if its complete fiction but the image I'm thinking of is a warrior(knight or not) who carries a polearm with them but that slings it over their back for convenience. I have seen backhanging baldrics for large swords so I thought it might be possible for a spear as well but then again, I'm not sure..
