Hello,
I am not a swordsman but I think that for protection we need a shield as in the illustrations
of these large small swords without guards.
Better use a gauntlet too

If handling the handle in defence position with two hands,
it makes a small guard and the shape of the end of the blade must deflect a little an attack.
Do viking swords with small guards and japanese katanas offer a better hand protection ?
