I asked this question as a ps on another thread but felt it deserved a thread of its own.
After the Viking influence waned in Britain and the Normans dominated, it seems that the billet forging skills inherited by the Vikings from the Celts was lost... or was it? So the question is this: who made all the blades for the swords from the beginning of the Norman era (1066 bCe) and the appearance of Germans/Italians/etc in Greenwich, and certainly Hounslow a little later. For a prime example, all the Arming/Knightly swords present up to the appearance of the rapier; were these all made in Britain, and what was the character of the metallurgy? There we are... short and to the point. ![]() |
