Nicely treated for the next 1000 years :-), the recess doesn't look like oxidation to me; it's too symmetrical. I also noticed the round recesses in the fuller; there might have been some kind of decoration there.

Since the blade appeared to have round copper inserts at one time, could the rectangular cutout at the base of the hilt at one time also have been adorned with copper, brass,etc., which is now missing?
