				 | Brazilian Faca de Ponta?

Hi gents, Can you please help me to identify this knife? Is it Brazilian Faca de Ponta or Genovese Coltello, or Spanish Punal? Thank you Alex |

Hello Alex, I would vote for Faca de Ponta. It seems to be very old, mid 19th century? Handle, blade shape point to Brazil but frankly said it would be the first I see with pierced blade. Therefore my age guess. Please compare: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...highlight=faca Regards, Detlef |

Thanks! I vote for Faca de Ponta as well, but like you said, the pierced blades not typical for Brazilian knifes. So, there is a chance that it was made in Europe for Brazilian market.

Could it be a Spanish blade that has been rehandled in Brazil, etc? The blade is just like an early-mid 19th C Spanish punal I use to have. Just a thought. Rich |

A comparison. First pic.: handle from one of my Faca de Pontas Second pic.: handle from a possible Mineira dagger from Brazil, taken from this thread: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...azilian+dagger Third pic.: handle from the dagger in question |

Thank Sajen, I think “Brazilian with Mediterranean blade” is the most plausible |

Hi, I don't know much about Faca Pontas, so this may be a bit off, but has anyone considered it might be a Mauritanian dagger? Both Brazilian and Mauritanian daggers have a heavy Spanish-Moorish influence. Found some examples that have similarity, but they are for sale |

A very interesting knife. Thanks for presenting it here. The pierced blade and copper insert on the blade suggest to me a Spanish origin for it, but the hilt is not Spanish. The style of the hilt suggests South America, and I would favor Argentina more than Brazil based on the combination of silver and gold washed (?) areas and the patterns stamped on them. The small bolster ("button") is not typical of either Brazilian or Argentine knives AFAIK, strengthening the idea that the blade is Spanish. The metal sheath is not like anything I have seen before from Brazil or Argentina, and seems more Mediterranean to me. I would favor an Argentine hilt rather than Brazilian for the reasons stated, and also because Argentina was a Spanish colony and Brazil was Portuguese. Ian |
