Hi Alan,
I do not know much in order to comment, but I think you've got the picture upside down in your post. I also do not know Iranian language but I know for sure the characters in the writing is Arabic. Normally, I would presumed that you need to hold the sword/dagger in your right hand and look at the blade with its tip pointing to the left. Just my opinion. Azhar |

The writing is upside-down so I couldn't read it very well. But I think it says "La fata illa 'Ali, la seyf illa Zhu-l-feqqar".
"There is no youth but (or greater than) 'Ali and no sword but Zhu-l-Feqqar" |
