				 | Sword maker of combination weapon

The pistol and sword elements of this weapon were almost certainly made separately, with the sword maker perhaps offering a pistol as an accessory to a high quality sword. The pistol is signed “Hock-I-Mayntz”. So the pistol maker was likely Johann Anton Hock working in the city of Mainz. Can anyone help identify the sword maker based on his marks: three stars and a crescent? Presumably he was also German. I would also welcome comments on the composition of the grip. It does not look like there is wood grain, so my guess is processed horn of some sort. |

The grip is no doubt made of horn. Germany was an exporter of horn for grips until WWII. |

The pommel figure depiction looks like the symbolic "Green Man" associated with hunting weapons and accessories. I have seen this figure on several late 16th to mid 18th century German origin powder horns or hunting flasks. The handle is without a doubt horn from my observation. Great piece!
