It is appreciations like this that make all the toil I took seem worthwhile: 40 years, almost solely dedicated to achieving that state of knowledge, expertise - and, of course, to gather together what is now The Michael Trömner Collection. Amazing. Its stock is so large as the barrel/forend.
... As if these were the antecipation of blunderbusses proportions. |

Those pictures are overwhelming.
Wish I'd access to this information half a lifetime ago when I built a (rifled) matchlock, copying an Italian gun with a sear bar, shown in a Robert Held book. The hairy guys in buckskins with flintlocks laughed at me. So . . . I never shot better in my life, including at gourds floating down the river. Heard a lot of click, click, @#%!! from the flint shooters. However, IMHO, when one has a lighted match, and black gunpowder, one is pretty much guaranteed an explosion somewhere. Even in a light rain. Heh, heh. God is good & permitted me to survive this fun, so I sold the rifle. Then I built, and unfortunately sold, a 1/3 scale 17th century matchlock musket with conventional trigger. Heard later some genius was shooting it. Made a few 1/3 scale flint and percussion guns. Not sure I am eager to go back to my shop & deal with #00-90 screws again, but those harquebus (-busses? -busi?) are tempting models. |
