I take my hat off to Mahratt who has written a great article on the previously unexplored subject!
I can add only a little info. I have bought this knife in summer 2011 at auction house in Berlin and I have sold it a little later on ebay since I have little interest in military swords. The original auction description included following info:
"Aus dem Nachlass Karl Tost, Angehöriger der deutschen Schutztruppe in Ostafrika und bis 1907 in Dar-es-salam. Seither in Familienbesitz."
Approx. translation:
"From the estate of Karl Tost, member of German Protection Forces in East Africa and till 1907 in Dar-es-salam. Afterwards the knife was held in his family."
Hope it helps a bit :-)
