Hi John,

Some close-up pictures would help. But what you appear to have is an Indian Tulwar of the type made for use at weddings and for decoration.
The blade looks like it is plated. Often they say 'Made in India' near the hilt.
I remember when I was a kid (in the 70s) there was an influx of 'military' style Sabre hilted ones that were sold as wall hangers in shops in the UK. Which fits with the timescale you mention.
The 'fancy' Tulwar hilted ones like you have I usually think are nicer than the souvenier/wallhanger ones sold in shops here, and are more commonly seen at Sikh and Hindu weddings in the UK.
