Some genius decided what this keris needed was a stag hilt. So I picked this up yesterday, and am wondering... in the collective opinion of the kerisphiles here, is it worth investing the time and effort to restore this?

In particular, I am wondering the following: Is the blade older? Is the pendok (or for that matter, the sheath in general) original to the blade? And if it is worth the effort, how do I begin to go about removing the stag (I think it has been affixed with glue)? Any other observations you can share would be very welcomed and much appreciated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It looks like someone did quite a number on this keris. It does indeed appear that the surface was ground down leaving nasty tool marks and i suspect that the sekar kacang is a later addition as well. I also suspect that the gonjo may be a later, poorly made replacement.

I don't think the pendok is worth saving and personally i wouldn't spent too much money trying to re-dress this poor thing. It's too bad because it looks like it may have once been a much more handsome blade.

Thank you David and (Dr.) David...

So aside from spending money I can't really afford to spend anyway on a project deemed unworthy of doing so, I still might like to "tinker." Any suggestions as to how I more-or-less surgically remove the stag from the piece? Also, how old would you estimate the blade to be? |
