I have had this piece for a while. Haven't seen one quite like it identified, in my research. The only item I found, is a picture of a Philippine warrior with a similar sword. Bagobo? Any ideas? The tag mentions Hon. A. B. Rouse. Upon research I found an A. B. Rouse, Congressman, from the fist quarter 20th century. I would say this piece at least dates to this period or before.

IT is a Mandaya sword from the Mandaya tribe on Mindanao Island. I agree with the dating - late 19 to early 20c. These are hard to find, congrats.

Thank you Battara. Is the picture of the warrior correct? Looks like he has a Mandaya sword in his hand, but the shield throws me off a little. It looks Moro. I have found other pictures of Mandaya warriors on the web and the shield is completely different. -- Stephen*

Here is a picture of a Manobo man wearing a Mandayan bolo from a post I made a few years back looking for information on a bolo I had just acquired. Here is a link to the post if you are interested.

You are welcome Stephen. As far as the man in the picture is concerned, I have seen this picture before but don't know who he is or where he is from.

You might find it interesting Battara, Hailing from the Blue Grass State, that A. B. Rouse was a Congressman from Kentucky at the turn of the century.
