Help with Yatagan no.1 inscriptions
Hello, Since my father died in February I try to learn more about 3 items from his Balkan collection. 2 Yatagas and 1knife. Yatagan which I post first is 65 cm long (only blade). It has lot of inscription which looks like Arabic, some signature (like owner or sword maker) also in other side of the blade. Metal looks old with rust spots but quality made, to me . Also signatures are written contra side as seen on other Yatagans. Along the cutting edge on both sides, dark line is seen.. like tempered (hardened)part- seen when turning the blade towards the sun light.

Hello Bojan:
Thanks for posting the additional picture of the complete sword. As I look at the inscriptions on the blade (none of which I can read, by the way) it seems that you have at least three different script forms. Also, the blade has a prominent T-spine. Although I own several yataghan, I am no expert on them. This looks like an interesting sword and I look forward to hearing what the experts have to say about it. Welcome to the Forum. Ian. |

Hi Bojan,
I can see a date but the last numeral is difficult to read. I think it translates as 1213 A.H. which would convert to 1798/99 A.D. Regards, Norman. |

Hi Bojan,
One of the designs looks like a take-off on a Tughra or monogram of Ottoman sultans. Each sultan had an individual design, but seemed to follow a standard design theme. See link. Maybe Ottoman date 1211, don't know about two vertical lines " -_". Blede is heavy T shape almost 1 cm wide at the back. Blade is not flat but has nice profile towards the cutting edge like in 18.th century calvary swords, I din't saw this type of edge in other Yatagans. Correctly, writtings looks like in thre diferent styles. Also see some numbers in last bold text...very interestig.
