elephants

Looking at examples previously sold on Oriental arms 3 out of 6 have an elephant on the back side of the spike. This piece has a peg that looks as though there was once something there. The seller...

Text book example

I think this piece is the very one illustrated in Anthony Tirri's, Islamic Weapons, Maghrib to Mogul. I bought it from Oriental Arms.

not to worry

As I said in the title, I respect the rules. It is shipping to me. It is not an active auction. I thought I made that clear. In any case I would appreciate comments.

I respect the rules of the forum

But I still wish that sometimes I could get comments before I hit the “buy it now” button.

Here is my example

Purchased from Oriental arms many years ago. I have sometimes wondered about the pouch at the base of the scabbard, it almost looks like skin.

In the details

More pictures to share.

I can attest that the blade is lethal. A wasp crawled out of the scabbard as I was taking pictures. It was presumably a hitchhiker from one of Artzi warehouses in Israel....

scabbard

"The scabbard is in kojongan or kekojongan style from Bali/ Lombok, but apparently more frequently used in Lombok."

I see that in “Kris and other Malay weapons”, G.B. Gardner identifies this as...

Terminology

Has anyone posted a glossary for all the specialized terminology associated with this area? I read through some of the posts and I am at a terrible loss.

Oh well indeed

As much as I appreciate the suggestions to go for another nice bottle of Scotch over this kris (I'm not a fan of bourbon), I am not the sort of person who would reverse a deal based on third party...

spot not on

The diameter of the handle of #1 is only about half an inch. I do not think it is plausible that it would have been suitable for a full size sword.

finishing

I think it is quite likely that some sort of finish was applied. Of course it is the custom with modern firearms to "blue" the steel (a controlled form of surface rusting) and WWII British pistols...

other examples

Here are other examples sold by the same vendor in the past. Two others are very much like mine, two are more in the white (maybe having been polished) and one seems to have the black selectively...

This dagger with colorful with pamor spear shaped blade (May be a secondary use of a spear blade) and keris style carved and...

Kuba dagger

I just got this Kuba dagger in. As I understand it, these are more ceremonial than intended as actual weapons. What I wonder about is the finish on the blade, is it paint or from some other...

Thanks for the interesting comments. I'll post more pictures when I receive the item, which won't be for a couple weeks because I will be traveling.

acier fondu

The phrase "acier fondu" began appearing on European pistols (mostly French andBelgian) in the nineteen century and is usually taken to mean "cast steel", suggesting an improved process for making...

Bringing the pictures over was I good idea. I don't feel too heavily invested in the item, I was probably drinking a nice Scotch when I hit the bid button and no one bid against me.
If not old and...
