I would say this is a composite sword. The scabbard has thin rings which indicates it was made post 1950 or so. The older scabbards had wide flattened rings. Looks like someone copied a Viking hilt...

I would use some #0000 Steel wool go lightly with it should take the varnish off without damaging the patina :). Then give it a buffing with a horse hair shoe brush.

Left out means room temperature. I bought a jar for making keris oil and within six months time it went rancid. I use Briwax which is a combination of bees wax and other waxes.

In my experience with coconut oil I found it goes rancid within a few months if left out :shrug: Mineral oil might do the trick it is more stable.
