G'day Rachelle,
Your sword would have been purchased by an individual officer, who would have been serving in a particular regiment at the time. Most swords only have generic blade decoration, but...

G'day Rachelle,
I think it is very likely that the coat of arms on the blade belong to the owner of the sword. Often (but not always), there will be a set of initials as well. If you can post some...

G'day Awdaniec666,
There is a lot of variation between examples of British 1788 light cavalry swords, particularly between different makers. My sword is a custom made sword for an officer, rather...

G'day Bas,
Unfortunately the attack hilt mechanism seems to be missing the part which keeps the bars open. I need to look at other examples to find out what is missing.

Giant British 1788 Light Cavalry Sabre

G'day Guys,

Another interesting sword joined my collection recently. It is a British 1788 pattern, light cavalry officer's sabre, but there is nothing "light" about it. It is a beast of a sword...

It took a while, but I finally got my hands on one of these. Persian, but with a later scabbard.

G'day Guys,
A similar sword to the one that opened this thread has popped up at an auction. Although it has been heavily restored, and has a replacement blade, it does show what my hilt would have...

Yeah that is one of them. You haven't noticed a GILL mark anywhere on it have you? It may be marked GILL on the tang like the early Osborn examples.

G'day Radboud,
I have also seen swords of a similar vintage to the Crown over HO marked Osborns, that have a Crown over TG mark. Maybe this was used by Thomas Gill, but I haven't yet found one with...

G'day Jack,
I think your sword is probably older than 1792. There were several Drurys and I would place yours closer to 1780 than 1790. It looks like an infantry officer's hanger of the type that...
