I'm with Jose - strong contender of being a genuine Sulu knife/dagger!

Apologies for being ambiguous, Ray!

I was trying to ask for the tang's cross-section - looks like it actually is rectangular (width greater than thickness) as typical for non-early Moro kris.

D'accord!

I agree with your estimate and it even could be early 20th century despite obvious wear. (OTOH, 22" is still on the smaller side and a...

Hello Tim,

I'm with Detlef, Albert, and Rick - most certainly this was an inset wooden patch to repair any defect in the material. This is not unusual with Moro burlwood hilts, especially larger...

Hello Ian,

This blade style is usually found on the Malay peninsula. This is corroborated for the second example by the scabbard foot which is a Melayu feature (peninsula or coastal Sumatra). I'd...

Hello Ian,

Actually, Alan argues for the modern keris to appear around mid-14th century, possibly/probably during Gajahmuda's role as main royal advisor and military lead. Convincing idea and a...

Hello Ian,

Interesting thoughts:

This all is based on quite a few assumptions. Just as an example, fittings will usually rot away within several decades; in such case, even a revered gift blade...

Hello Ian,

I have the book; and was asking for the features your opinion is based on.

I believe we already established here quite some time ago that Cato's dating for archaic Moro kris needs...

Hello Ian,

Actually, we don't know for sure!

There is no doubt that Mojopahit cultural influences carried over into subsequent ruling houses on Java (and elsewhere).

However, there are no...

Hello Ed,

There is lots of underlying meaning: However it apparently changed through time and, especially, between cultures. This would need a really long essay to do the topic justice...

Hello Ian,

Very nice blade, indeed - congrats!

It is obviously old. However, what features do you base the pre-1800 dating on?

Gorgeous fittings!

Hello Ed,

There are kris/keris that have the gangya/gonjo forged integrally with the blade; the default is them being made as separate pieces though. This tradition is based on underlying...

Very nice garab, Jeff, congrats!

The motif on Moro blades (like Ian's here) is usually a bit asymmetrical. Thus, I believe they might be different.

Hello Ian,

IMO, all parts of the hilt are not genuine. It really helps to include pics from additional angles to allow visualisation of features in 3D.

Not much hopes for the blade, too, albeit...

These pieces usually got made for sale to outsiders in a colonial setting.

Similar blades are also coming from Negara (Banjarmasin area); also the "luk" at the tip seems intentional.

Based on the slender blade as well as the scabbard I'd suggest this...
