I visited a friend today and made a couple of swaps. I do not know who did best. This is a big one 40cm tall and 24cm across the top. Chunky shame about the crack, you cannot have everything and cracks are often found on African pieces. Anybody got a bigger one.

Here is my biggest Mangbetu knife. It measures 43,5 cm and 26 cm across the top.
And it also has a crack in the handle. :o

But I must say that your piece is more elaborately forged. Mine has a more simple design.

What would you think if we showed some different Mangbetu knives ?

Hello Tim and Freddy!! Great Idea Freddy! I hope that also Tim agree.
Here is my Trumbush (at least once!!) and my little Mangbetu dagger, that Freddy already knows :)
About the Trumbush: I have read (but I don't remember where :p ) that the holes on the blade means the number of the wives of the owner

This one has a bit of a peculiar design. I once read that the holes in a trumbash represented the number of wives.

So this knife was owned by a bachelor :p

Tim

There you go bragging about how big your trumbash is  You know that some of us with smaller or no trumbashs will have a bad case of trumbash envy  ;) Very nice piece

Congrats

Three contributors in this thread say they read (or red) that the number of holes corresponded to the owner's number of wives. However, no one cites a source for that. How can this be credible without a source?

Very well noted Marcus, and I must admit that it is indeed very disappointing to the considerable number of readers out there who often may be researching topics and these details would be most helpful.
In defense of the guys in this discussion, including our late friend Lew, were actually so well versed in these fields that they likely were just complacent. Despite the level of detail many of us place in posts, we are not held to any academic standards, so such placement is purely voluntary.

I did, however, respond with what I could find as an answer on the other trumbash thread, and noted source for what I hope will offer some useful explanation.
