View Full Version : Nice Tulwar

Hello,
I just won a bid for a tulwar on ebay. 32" blade with two fullers close to the spine. It looks European, but I know Indian blades sometimes had such fullers. The curvature is quite high, almost like that of a shamshir...looks quite nice. Unfortunately it is missing the scabbard, so I will have to make one eventually. What's odd on this piece and the one I got from CollectingNewbie is that the ricasso is very slight, it could almost be an edge. On many tulwars I've seen it very highly defined, a complete break from the edge.
Any thoughts or details would be most appreciated.

Hello Emanuel,
I was watching this one too, as I thought it had a very nice shape to the blade.
It appears a good few tulwars don't have much of a ricasso.

Again, congratulations, I think it is a very nice honest sword.

Thanks, the handle got my eye too. I think it'll fit quite well in hand...I'm a bit concerned about the angle of the handle to the blade, it may require removal and re-setting.

From previous discussions and a look at Rawson, I take it this is a Panjabi hilt...is this correct?

No more comments about this tulwar?

Some more pics after cleaning. The handle was black from rust...a bit of sanding revealed red rust underneath, which I cleaned off. Under the flash of the camera I see some rust left. The blade cleaned up nicely also, and the apparently blunt edge took a bite out of me.
Next step is making a scabbard, and my first question is how I may go about curving the wood plates.

Have you tried to etch it? At least a window?
The blade configutration looks just too good not to be tempted....

No luck so far, Ariel :(
I brushed on some lime juice with little effect. I can see what looks like swirls, but that might be on account of the moving lime juice. I'll try some stronger acid...if the swirls are indeed there, then it looks like a patter-weld, not wootz.

Hey, what's wrong with having a sword with a pattern-welded blade? :D

Nothing, nothing! It's all good :D just clarifying that I saw large swirls, not dendritic structures.
