Hello all,

I know we don't usually discuss modern clothing, but I thought this was something interesting to share a recent purchase: An unusal Hawai'ian shirt that features native Hawai'ian weapons. :) I'm not sure 100% of the accuracy of the weapons portrayed. I recognize most of the weapons to those I've seen in the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, but the "?" shaped club I wasn't sure about...it reminds me of what I think I recall being an Iroquois club??

i believe that's a newa la'au, or wooden club. here's a similar one (no. 11)

I bet they could sell a lot of those shirts to members of the forum !

I've looked out the booklet by Te Rangi Hiroa on 'Arts and Crafts of Hawa'i vol X war and Weapons', and he illustrates a rough-headed club from the Bishop Museum very similar to the one on the shirt. In fact, looking at his various illustrations I did wonder if the ones on the shirt were copied from the booklet [or, both shirt AND booklet were copied from the same artefacts].

Probably, there's even a Kindle version of Arts and Crafts of Hawaii out there now.

Hello Spunjer, LJ and Fern. Thanks for the info.

One book I saw at the museum that looked interesting but I didn't have a chance to browse through was Lua: art of the Hawai'ian Warrior by Sally-jo Keala-o-anuenue Bowman
