With the great help of a friend I was able to add this nice Malay sundang to my collection.
Here are the pics from the seller, will add more when I have received it. |

Very nice indeed. I like the pamor and blade section, so different to the Philippines.

What a spectacular way to start the new year. Very nice Sajen. Congrats.
Is the entire hilt ivory or just the ferrule and pommel? |

Thank you folks! The sundang was once sold by "Mytribalart", here the description from Arjan:
A Malay sundang of excellent quality. The pommel and ferrule of hippo ivory. The blade with very nice pamor and openworked detail. Original scabbard, perfect fit, tiny damage. Bought by a tobacco plantation owner on Sumatra at the end of the 19th century. Size: Total 67 cm, blade 48 cm. # Albert: I think that only the pommel and ferrule is from hippo ivory. Attached a few more pictures from Arjan. Regards, Detlef |

Very nice Malay sundang! The scabbard is Melayu. I think the pommel would be classified as danganon if this were a Moro kris. This must be an heirloom sword, which do not come on the market very often.

Congratulations Detlef,
What a fantastic Malay sundang! Wonderful ivory hilt and fiber winding around the handle. Also the blade shows great lamination. Is this 'dark' etch of the blade a common thing on Malay sundangs? I remember I owned a Malay sundang with a similar dark/black etch on the blade. At that time I thought it had a 'Javanese' (not genuine) treatment. Kind regards, Maurice |

Since it seems to be the original etch it would be nearby that it was a common thing. Best regards, Detlef |

Hello Albert,
Since I've received it today I am able to answer your question now, no, the edges are not really sharp. Regards, Detlef Last edited by Sajen; 10th January 2025 at 02:35 PM. Reason: spelling |
