Water can and does make this sort of corrosion, seen it many times from storage in poor conditions in leather scabbards.

A nice sword though!

Thanks Ian, I agree the etching works well on this one, I believe its a quenched edge as most of these are. The mark I have seen referred to as a Chakram by some Thai collectors and as you say seems...

A Northern Thai daab with silver and ivory

Another day another daab... :)

Nothing that hasn't been seen before, but one I quite like for the overall aesthetic. Good quality silver mounts (with an intact pommel cap for a change!) with of...

A lovely example Norman, as you note not all of these were from Harvey and among these hanger patterns I've noticed various subtle degrees of curvature, length, fullering etc. Mine seems to be rather...

As usual you are far too kind Jim, just a little digging through sources that are fairly easy to access in these days of most old books and journals being online and searchable.

Just to add a...

A very nice example with interesting lamination showing. Yours is of a type I have seen described as one of the typical Laos types, this being the Vientiane type. The ones I have seen usually have a...

Montagnard dha for sale

A nice complete montagnard dha for sale with the scabbard, these aren't common on the market, particularly with the scabbard. It has a nice bronze collar and guard and quite long handle.

250 +...

Northern Thai or Laotian daab

Probably my favourite sword in the collection at the moment, this is a very well made specimen from what is now northern Thailand or Laos. The main features are a very wide spine with a distinctive V...

Hi Ian,

I thought you might find this one intriguing, I very much agree with your comments, it is both strangely a dha and at the same time quite atypical of any commonly seen dha types. The...

A European bladed dha

This one is a bit of a mystery and has quite a few unusual features. The blade is a Samuel Harvey from a mid 18th century hanger. Of course European blades do occasionally turn up in dha but the...

It is fairly petite, I'll see if I can find time today to do a pic with a few others to show the actual size a little better. It is only 75cm overall.

A very large Burmese dha

As the last dha I posted got a good reaction I thought members might enjoy this one as well. Quite a different animal to the petite one I last posted... this is 113cm overall and over 1kg in weight....
