On the right, the central face of the blade formed by four bands of pattern-welding may be discerned in addition to the non-patterned steel of the two edges, which are greatly eroded in this view. In the central portion of this picture and on the left, the pattern-welded bands have been partially eroded away, exposing a straight (non-patterned) iron core. The patterned bands are only one to two millimeters in thickness. Thus the cross section of this sword would show four separate bands of pattern-welding on each side for a total of eight twisted rod composites as shown in this cross-sectional diagram:
