Default A genuine WW1 Trench Club ?

Hi,
my research suggests that this trench club is a genuine WW1 relic (there are a lot of fakes made with vicious spikes and dubious Regimental markings).

Lathe turned, lead filled with hobnails embedded in the striking end. The loop seems to be sisel or similar and is spliced together (not knotted).

Length 18" ( 46cms)
Max. diameter nearly 2" (48mm)

Weight 600g nearly 1.32 lbs

Please has anyone any more information on these, thank you

Kind Regards David

Hi Graeme,
thanks ....there is a bent over nail approx. 1/2" below the top of the club driven in from the side ...it is 'aimed' at the lead 'insert'. (as arrowed in pic)

All the best
David

Of the few that I've seen that I know to be legit, this is of the proper form. I know there were variations (i.e. no exact form for these make-shift trench artifacts), but this one is of the pattern most commonly seen circa WWI. Nice piece-

Default trench club

hi all, found the site while trying to research a trench club i inherited from my grandfather. the one you posted is identical, 12 hobnails etc. ( except for 18 rings on the handle ) am trying to post some pix. he served in the 14th batt royal irish rifles and fought at the somme as part of the 16th division. as for the club, im not sure where he got it. i also inherited a trench spade and on a visit to the somme centre here in n.ireland, the same one was part of the german exhibit!! so not so sure if he picked up the club from an axis trench as well? any help appreciated, good luck, tony
