I wonder if anyone here might be able to tell me what purpose this small container has been made for.

The thread should be moved to Ethnographic Weapons: it is a 19th century Greek container for bone marrow, used to grease weapons, called a medoulari and carried at the belt.

What a brilliant art work addition .. Andreas... perfect. I agree it would be more advantageous on Ethnographic.
