Hi! Would be helpful to have:

1. pictures of the whole piece

2. pictures of the inscription in question

Then perhaps our folks can give you a translation.

Salaams ArmsAndAntiques ~ You will be interested to learn that the first cartouche contains the makers name Amal... made by...etc. The Hijri date inscribed appears to be 1242 ..Now we are 1435. (Going by the date it is 188 year old sword...from 1826)

Hello Ibrahim,

Shukran! Thank you for the excellent input. It is much appreciated. So an early 19th C. example as opposed to a later example. It would be interesting to see how early one can find this type of yataghan and how early they are found dated.

Though of course a date on the blade does not mean an overall date for the piece...

I must have had by now between 15 and 25 examples of this type, and they appear to be most common of the type. Probably the most common type of Islamic weapon, that is also one of the more pleasing and aesthetically interesting types of weapons.

Salaams Ibrahiim!

Regarding the first cartouche:

The first line:

عمل ...بن حسين أغا

Translation: "Made by ....son of Hussein Agha"

The second line:

صاحب و مالك حامد أغا

Translation: "The owner and master of Hamid Agha"

Sorry, but I couldn't read the full name in the first line.

Yes, 1242 AH corresponds to 1826 CE.

Ibrahiim, I salute you for your positivity in this forum. You deserve a lot of praise, buddy!

Best regards,
Ahmed Helal Hussein

All I have to add is that this is Balkan in origin, perhaps from the Bosnia area.

ArmsAndAntiques--you have received a ban for violating the forum rules on posting items currently offered in an auction. This is a particularly flagrant violation as the auction in question is your own.

I strongly suggest you read the forum Rules carefully, lest another such violation result in a permanent ban.
