Default Algerian Nimcha needs help

Hi Guys,

I need your help.
What do you think about this German blade, is it 17th or early 18th c.

Thank you for your help

Best,
Kubur

Kubur,

I am sure this thread will soon receive plenty of responses from those, who have studied these old backsword blades a lot better than me. Comparing your image to those published on the Passau wolf it seems to fit markings associated with the 16th and 17th centuries. The hilt to me looks like an older, 18th century hilt as well, so obviously the blade cannot be newer than that. 17th century seems quite plausible to me at least.

For better response, I will move this to the European section since you are asking about the German blade. You might get better response over there.

Hi Teodor,

I have the feeling that it's 17th c. maybe late 17th.
Let see what the forum members will say...
Have you seen the hilt is made of two pieces of horn and not one like on the Moroccan nimcha...

Hi Kubur,

in my opinion you are right, this seems to be a Felddegen (battlefield epee) from Germany in extraordinary good condition. The age you suggest is also good. Here is another Felddegen with a similar blade from 1700.

I have a British late 1700s early 1800s navel dirk blade {no handle or guard} of pretty much the same as this German blade. I will add a picture when I find it.

That is a great question. Sadly, I do not have any older nimchas in my collection where I can examine the hilt, but I suspect that the fancier Algerian ones with tortoise shell hilts have scales and not a single piece of horn underneath. I have also never been to Malta yet, but the collection of older examples there should probably provide some clues as well.
