Default Question about Yataghan hilt decor functionality.

Has anyone any idea about the purpose of the square pyramid like decor/part on many yataghan hilts. I have seen some that have two of them and some that have three. Very rarely four or only one. And they all seem to have a tiny leg/support that keeps it a little above from the rest of the hilt. I would consider those just an element of decor, but they are placed on the same spots (most of the time) of the hilts of yataghans of varying styles and pretty much have the same form ()square pyramid). So to me it is obvious that it should mean more than just a random decor. Any help is appreciated
