Pepperbox with damascus barrels

I was impressed by the thread with Ward's square barrel Matchlock and the consequent development on the pattern welding postings, specially the "Fun with Fimo" once posted by Lee and brought into Ward's thread by Rand.
Not that i am within these techniques at all, but looking at the above left pattern in the article's page 7, it came to mind the posting of this XIX century Belgium pepperbox, with expressive damascus barrels, that i got the other day. Further in the link i am inserting here, in an interesting Belgium page, we can see a sampling barrel made with eight different patterns, as a method to show the customers, for the selection of the decoration they wanted for their order. These eight patterns all have a name.

The example pistol they show in the page has a pattern very similar to that in my pistol ( i think ). Its a pitty they don't mention the name of such pattern.

In Manfred Sachse book "Damascus Steel" he pictures a nice pepperbox with damascus barrel and refers to the pattern as Crolle. He also pictures some pages from a catalogue dated 1896 and these types of patterns are referred to as Crolle I, Crolle II and Crolle Extra. From the picture you provide it is close to the Crolle Extra.

Thanks a lot for your input, Rick. It makes a lot of sense. One of the eight names on the Belgium sample barrel is Crolle.

Hey Fernando,

This is a beautiful example of the barrel makers art. The 19th century European barrel makers seem almost to have been in a "rennaissance more" as what they produced was both prolific and dramatic. The high contrast pattern on you pistols barrels in a prime example of the armorer art.

They is a book called,"Damascus Steel" by Manfred Sachse that is an excellent reference for damascus steel with superb photos. There are even known patterns in a gun barrel that have a persons name, Prince Albert name in the pattern on a barrel is one known example of this, page 131, figure 221.

This book also has excellent drawing of how some of these patterns were achieved, sometimes simple and complex at the same time.
