Okay with that in mind, here's a thought... What if the original owner was left handed and wore their blade higher up than usual, because of the slight asymmetry of the guard that might cause discomfort if not worn higher when on the right side? A custom scabbard for someone who didn't draw or use their sword quite like their compatriots and couldn't obtain a proper left handed saber. That would explain the seam being on apparently the wrong side and the absence of a drag style chape (a drag is useless if the tip of the scabbard is unlikely to scrape against ground).
