Default Dayak Container

Anyone know what this is ?
Dayak by the look of the character with the shield.
70cm (27ins) long
Bamboo
Thin cord which has been painted or varnished.
The decoration appears to be some sort of stain, with the light colour being the original colour of the bamboo.
The top of the lid appears to be varnished thin canvass.
Nothing inside apart from cobwebs.

I am putting it down as a tourist piece, mainly because of the crudity of the decoration, but I am not sure.

All opinions welcome as usual.
Regards
Roy

The shape of the shield looks dayak, but otherwise I see noting that makes me think of dayak /Borneo.

No clue what it is, or what it is meant for.

Best regards,
Willem

Hello Willem

Don't you think that the character holding the shield looks a lot like the creatures on the Dayak Shields ?

Yes, it looks Dayak to me, very like a blowpipe dart container, except for the removable "cage" structure, instead of the usual lid. My best guess would be ... a container for small animals or large insects ?

Sorry,

I specifically wrote "shape of the shield"
The shape of the shield is the only thing that makes me think of dayak.
The decoration of the shield already does not look like dayak to me.

Best regards.

Hi Roy,
Not a clue as to origin, but maybe it is, as has been suggested above, a cage for insects. The Chinese kept crickets in little cages....maybe this is a similar idea from wherever it originates?

Thanks gents

We'll leave it as a cage for Large Fireflies unless something else turns up.

Bird catcher/cage? Dayaks (if it is Borneo) did collect feathers, right?
