19th Century Fencing Foils

Hello over there....

I just checked in to strengthen the 19th century part of this forum

You see a matching pair of decorative (most certainly not used for actual training) fencing foils with a so called "German handle". This type of grip (as far as I know) was quite unique to Germany. The guard is situated directly above the quilllons, therefore reducing the ricasso to a very small area (in contrast to the Italian style handles). The blades itselves are made in Solingen and the tips are blunted. The blades were imported by J. H. Lau in New York whose firm was seated in 75 Chambers Street.

I've found some information on J.H. Lau and his firm, but does anyone here know when he started his business?
