Default Pics: New Madurese or Solonese Hilt?

Dear Marco,

I know, you won't like this one: very new model of (I don't know whether it is) Madurese or Solonese keris hilt. I got this one in a one pasar, in a small Madurese kiosque of keris and hilt in Jakarta.

I would like to see your comments on it, Marco...

Thanks for posting this example. That is exactly the type of hilt that came to mind when Marco made mention of new styles of Madurese hilt making.
IMO it is a nice example of modern keris art and as Alan stated in the other thread there are some folks who just collect hilts. I can certainly see it in such a collection, but i don't think i would personally put it on one of my keris.

Ha? You like it? But this hilt is too big for a normal keris. Anyway, I keep this hilt in my collection of "jejer or ukiran kalawijan" (unordinary hilt). Some kalawijan hilt are good-looking, and creative. I had once, the "pornographic" one. But somebody had taken it... Thanks Marco..

Default Naga Melilit

Excentric,

Your hilt is unordinary, may be you can call it "naga melilit" (I don't know the right English word for a naga which rounded its victim). Whether you could or you coudn't use it for keris hilt, it depends on your Marco.

As far as I know, in Javanese people got used to unordinary things. So they cultivate also "unordinary form or art of making hilt" too. Either pornographic, extraordinary in size, decoration. All of them are classified as "ukiran kalawijan".

Kalawija itself has some other meanings too. A man with unordinary posture (too short, too tall) or dwarves, they are used to be called as "kalawija". Even in Javanese courts like Yogyakarta and also Surakarta, their kings used to employ such unordinary people, and those people beared name as: "abdi dalem kalawijan" or servants with unordinary physical condition. According to Javanese belief (pls correct me anyone, if I'm wrong), if you maintain and employing "kalawijan people", will get fortune..

Look at the keris' world too. They have also dhapur with "kalawija" style. You may classify, all the keris luks (curved keris) more than 13 luks, called "keris kalawijan". Just mention, keris luk with kalawija style for instance: (1) dhapur "raga wilah" with 15 luks, (2) dhapur "trisirah" with 21 luks, (3) dhapur "kala tinantang" with 21 luks too, (4) dhapur "kala lunga" with 23 luks. I have one kalawija keris too, named "kala bendhu" with 29 luks. Although with so many luks, but still have a certain beauty -- in the eyes of the behorder.

So, kalawija style, believed to suit for "kalawijan people". Mad person, also classified as this category. Though a very prominent "seniman" or artist, may also called as "kalawijan". Excentric person, with a very strong personality (either positive or negative, may be called as "kalawijan")

So Marco, if you want to use your "naga melilit" hilt, probably it is suitable for keris naga with kalawijan-luks. I don't find any dhapur "naga kalawija" yet until now.
