Question To the Moderators...

wow! went to work yesterday and when i came home last night, first thing i did was read cannonnm's hijacked thread. it made a very interesting turn, to say the least, lol. reading wayan's imitation of a female dog in heat was enuff for me to sit down and nuke some orville ridenbacher product.

i realize this is a scholarly type of forum; lots and lots of intelligent posts and posters, but it's ironic that with the nature of what we love to collect, any type of aggression are banned or locked. my thinking is, why can't we have a "Coffee lounge" page where forumites could be more open?

Actually, I thought collectors of swords and blades are different from users of swords and blades, though some may be both collectors and users.

At any rate, users of swords and blades may not be aggressive too. I thought for most martial arts school, self-control is a highly respected virtue, and is achieved through determined hard practice of the art.

well, that's the conventional wisdom, but with what exposure i had with martial artists, i guess it comes down to the person's personality.

nechesh,

and the point is? oops, never mind....

Hi Ron ,
I find little value in discussing our passion with an American transplant ebay Dealer who knows less about the things he is talking about than I do .

Then when he starts throwing insults around ; well , who needs that ?

I GUESS THAT EXPLAINS THE ATTITUDE OF THE FLAMEING POST PERHAPS THE HOTTIEST, UNREASONABLE AND MOST UCOMPROMISING WE HAVE HAD MAY WE BE SPARED ANY WORSE ONES. WHEN I WAS IN BALI I FOUND THE PEOPLE VERY POLITE ,FRIENDLY AND NOT AT ALL CONFRONTATIONAL SO I WAS SURPRIZED TO FIND A BALANESE WITH A BAD NEW YORK ATTITUDE. A TRANSPLANT FROM A MORE AGRESSIVE AREA OF THE WORLD WOULD PERHAPS EXPLAIN IT MAY BALIS SERENE AND BEAUTIFUL LIFE STYLE MELLOW HIM AND MAKE HIM A HAPPY PERSON IN TIME.

Some years ago when my wife and I went to PI for vacation, we stopped over in Bali for a few days and sure is, people over there were extremely polite and friendly, but after reading Mr. ka "Wayan's" posting what a disgrace I was ready to fly back to Bali last night to show Mr. ka "Wayan" how clumpsy my Moro Krises tang is. Oops! thought I was Superman

Where is that "some etch" now anyways?
Moderator's, do i get a tech 10 for this? I'll take it.

Default Back to the weapons, please ...

Guys:

Slamming people who are no longer members and cannot respond here is not very respectful. I understand the recent incident was disruptive and created some hard feelings. Let's not go there any more. Let's get back to the weapons and away from personalities.

There is much more interesting material we can occupy ourselves with.

Ian.

Scholarly does not equal "boring!" I venture to say that there is a very open atmosphere here, with a good amount of humor and personal exchange thrown in (and coffee, too).

What is not tolerated, however, are insults & flame wars. This has always been the "Vikingsword" way, and always will be (at least as long as the present Mod Squad is alive ). I think we all know the difference between debate, even heated debate, and venom.

Hi Ron:

A fair question. A long time ago, before being asked to help moderate here, I asked much the same thing (a search for "supreme katanas" on the old forum would turn up an interesting thread). Back then, I thought watching written battles was great fun. Now, I dread them, and do my best to keep the peace.

Unfortunately, an otherwise enjoyable forum can quickly turn into a cesspool of flames and acrimony if such such things aren't stopped quickly. Anyone who has spent enough time on web discussion boards has seen this happen.

As moderators, we're acutely aware of the atmosphere of the forum, and take the responsibility of maintaining and fostering a pleasant atmosphere seriously. We do make mistakes. The only agenda, however, is a genuine desire to improve the forum.

Frankly, I don't really think of this as a "scholarly" forum. This is probably because I don't think of myself as anything more than a passionate amateur, certainly no scholar. There are definitely those here who are scholars, and I'm honored and pleased to have the chance to learn from them.

Several members have brought up the issue of a "lounge" to discuss off-topic subjects. If it were to happen, civility would still be a requirement.

Best,
Andrew

Dajak,

I do think that he was able to make that point clear. The problem came from his taking others' disagreement as a personal offense, and becoming very hostile, and even openingly insulting, toward other forum members and the staff.

New ideas are welcome, disagreement is welcome, personal insults are not. It is as simple as that.

I found the attitude and insults offensive (and said so in the post). Although I tried to be kind, I do not appreciate such attitudes - I get them enough at work and the library! (level 1 trauma chaplain here)
