Default Yatagan

Hello there;

I'm so impressed of your knowledge that I have no other option than putting one more piece on the table. I believe it's from The Balkans, mid 19th century.

In the inscription I see three numbers; Eight, three and four, Am I right?

Hi Jacques
very nice yatagan, indeed from Balkans, his handle decor is very symptomatic
about the translation, must probably it's wrote in Turkish
only be able to read
AMAL MOHAMED either MADE BY MOHAMED

as well as you, I was believing that was some digits, but my translator seems formal, should be not ...
could be the complement of the first name, a typically name from Balkan for instance,
unusual for an Arabic native

but wait for, more skilled than us ... they are some here

à +

Not seen that Balkan style before but elements on it do point to Europe in origin.

To me this very nice yataghan with its hilt and blade style is reminiscent to earlier yataghans (like 17th century early). You can compare it to Sulayman the Magnificent's yataghan. Obviously, Sumayman's is of a quality fitting to the greatest Ottoman ruler, but the style and the dimensions have some similarities. Unortunately, I cannot discern the date, which would be key to showing whether I am somewhat correct or totally wrong about the age of this one.

Anyway, lovely yataghan and better pictures of the gold decoration on both sides of the blade will not hurt.

Regards,
Teodor

Hello,

A very beautiful piece! The date is interesting. I am reading 843 hijri. Its either that or 1348 (or 1384) but I doubt this Yataghan is that recent.

Hi,

It goes like this:

Eddünya bi'l-mâl
Ve'l-ahire bi'l-iman

a rough translation is:

What you need is
goods and chattel for this world
and faith for the other world

The first part of the bottom line is amel-i Mohammed as Dom suggests.
The second part is little bit tricky but my reading is li-sene 83 / Year 83 - it could be 1183 or 1283 but this is for the forum experts to decide.

And master Dom, I needed someone more skillful with the force for this one :P

Best,
