Default old wild boar spear-large ''walking'' stick...

Hello dear members,

For comment and for share,
I wanted to show you this one,
I bought this item this morning at flea market,
a strange item, I could not resist to buy it !...

seems like a (too) massive walking stick- head club ,
almost 1 meter long,
with an old, large and massive spear is hidden inside with a triangular section.

The seller told me that's for him it's an old french old boar hunting spear,
I think too it must be.
Pretty old, there is a matching mark on the ''hilt'' and ''scabbard''

maybe someone can help / knows this ''stamp'' ?

the scabbard seems to have remains of old ''medieval'' decorations

I ready saw in France or Germany this kind of decos on castle walls

What do you think ?

Kind regards

Looks more like the top spike on a poll axe (or late halberd). Boar spears would generally have a wide, sharp edged blade and a crosspiece at the base to bleed out the boar quickly, while preventing it from pushing towards it's attacker up the haft. Or at least a hole for attaching a stopper. Nice piece in any case. Looks brutal. I've seen marks like that somewhere. Maybe I can recall it from long term storage in my brain. I think the term is 'sigil' - used in magical & alchemic writings... See also This reference book on sigils.

Hello,

Thank's a lot Kronckew for your message and informations,

looking for poll axe top spike,
I found in the polearms category the ahlspiess ( a spike-spear )
used in germany, really look like but usually made with a square section, not triangular,
and usually, as polearm, placed on top of a long stick,
this one could be a later selfmade hunter creation ?

Thank's too for the sigil info, I will look-search
( really interesting in any case !!)
Too long to be a vampire hunting spike ?!

Nothing to do with hunting. Appears to be a sword-cane, one of many kinds. Please post a photo of it in close position.

This item is totally unsuitable for wild boar hunting. I think you have never seen or felt the menace of a boar in attack - with this tooth picker you'll be dead or at least seriously wounded immediately

Hello,
Nothing to compare with a classic walking stick sword ,
you could see on the first pictures that the blade is really large and thick in comparison with the tape measure, more than 2cm thick,
the end too is still really large but the point is sharp
like a good kattar push dagger...
I hope my last pictures will help,

For the tooth picker'' idea,
the ''blade is 2-3'' time thicker than classic sword walking sticks , really heavy and thicker than most of spears ends I have seen so I think it's will be ok !

I agree with the limit of boar hunting: without a fork shape - spikes...
the animal can't be stopped when we stab him and he can hurts you heavily.
( maybe just made for give ''the coup de grāce '' as they do with hunting swords...)

So it can be an old stabbing weapon , maybe an armor breaker
set on a later smaller stick,
the ''scabbard'' wood is made of lighter wood than the ''hilt'' and seems to be older ( the sigil-mark is matching on both side but it can be added later... ?)

NB: On the second and third pictures, the spear head is directly set on the walking sword blade and the scabbard for comparison,
not 10cm upper ...

Default for comparison

This, in case anyone is wondering how substantial a weapon is needed to deal with Mr Piggy in the wild.

I don't have much weapons knowledge, but I do have a lot of woodworking knowledge- IMO, the handle is a completely new construction , designed to make a "swordstick" out of what was likely a much longer spear, while retaining an original scabbard. The handle bears no resemblance in either wood or style to the scabbard.

Hello all,

Thank you all for the comments,

The ''hilt'' shaft seems more recent as discussed ,
it can even come from an old walnut bed leg
but, changing for changing,
they should obviously put a long shaft, even a broomstick instead of this strange one,

SO WHY ISN'T IT JUST A SHORT POLEARM ??

Looking for shortened polearms shaft,

I found this one: the candeliere polearm
Candeliere - an Italian term, literally 'candlestick'. This was a shortened awl pike., a shortened ahlspiess.

Sure this one without the circle protection anymore
and 'the 'new'' shaft hilt a little shorter than the others...
