Default Arms and Armor table ay Baltimore Show

Was wondering if there has been any thought as to having a Ethnographic Arms and Armor table/tables at the Baltimore show as this show seems to have the feedback as being the best show in the US for antique arms. This would also serve as a beacon gather point for particapting members that attend the show.

THERE WOULD BE AT LEAST 2 WAYS THIS COULD BE DONE IF TABLES WERE AVAILABLE, THE SHOW IS USUALLY VERY FULL. SEVERAL MEMBERS WHO ARE COLLECTOR /DEALERS ALREADY HAVE TABLES WHICH ARE FULL SO WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A CLUB TABLE, BUT IF THERE WAS ONE PERHAPS IT COULD BE NEAR THE OTHER MEMBERS TABLES IF POSSIBLE.

SEVERAL GROUPS SET UP TABLES AT THE FRONT OF THE SHOW FOR DISPLAY AND NOT SALES AND HAVE PEOPLE THERE WHO CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS. THEY OFTEN WEAR UNIFORMS AND GIVE DEMONSTRATIONS FROM TIME TO TIME.

THE OTHER POSSIBILITY WOULD BE TO HAVE A TABLE FOR MEMBERS TO SELL ITEMS THEY BRING TO THE SHOW. THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM IF TOO MANY ITEMS ARE BROUGHT OR NOT ENOUGH ITEMS. ITEMS WOULD ALSO HAVE TO BE ATTENDED TO AND ANY ITEMS LEFT UNATENDED BY THE OWNER WOULD HAVE TO BE PRICED.
ANY MEMBERS SELLING OR DISPLAYING WOULD HAVE TO PITCH IN TO PAY FOR THE TABLE. IN THE EVENT OF AN ITEM BEING ACCIDENTALY DAMMAGED OR TAKEN BY A THIEF THE GUYS AT THE TABLE SHOULD NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE, BUT SHOULD REPORT ANY THEFT AS SOON AS NOTICED TO THE SHOW OFFICIALS AND THE OWNER. IF DAMMAGE OCCURS AND IS SEEN THEY SHOULD TRY TO KEEP THE PERSON THERE AND GET THE OWNER OF THE ITEM TO COME AND TALK OVER WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.


ITS UNFORTUNATE THAT A SIMPLE IDEA HAS TO BECOME SO COMPLICATED BUT THATS THE WAY OF THE WORLD. SOMEONE HAS TO BE IN CHARGE AND OFTEN FINDING THAT PERSON PROVES TO BE IMPOSSIBLE AS IT ALWAYS PUTS RESPONSIBILITY ON THEM AND POSSIBLE PROBLEMS.

THE BEST SUGGESTION I COULD MAKE WOULD BE FOR 3 OR 4 MEMBERS TO GET TOGETHER AND PLAN IT AMONG THEMSELVES AND TRY AND GET A TABLE. THEY COULD BRING THEIR ITEMS TO SELL OR DISPLAY AND BE IN CHARGE OF THE TABLE. IF THEY HAVE ROOM AND WANTED TO LET OTHER MEMBERS PUT SOMETHING ON THEIR TABLE TO SELL THEY COULD CHARGE A FAIR FEE OR PERCENTAGE OF SALE PRICE TO THAT MEMBER.

I THINK GETTING A TABLE WOULD BE THE BIGGEST PROBLEM AND DOUBT YOU COULD GET ONE FOR THIS YEAR AS IT IS CLOSE TO SHOW TIME. IF YOU ARE AT THE SHOW THAT WOULD BE THE TIME TO WORK SOMETHING OUT WITH OTHER MEMBERS AND TRY AND RESERVE A TABLE FOR NEXT YEAR.

Default This Years Tables are sold out

Hey Vandoo,

This years tables are unfortunately sold out, like your idea of 3-4 tables. Just think this forum would be a great presence at a show and benefit all collectors.

Rand, I see that you're located in Virginia? When did you move away from the PNW? Does that mean you won't be attending the Eugene show in April??

Moved to Virginia last Decenber and unfortunately will not be at the Eugene Knife show this coming April. Am looking forward to meeting the East Coast collectors and seeing what life on the other Coast is really like....

Like ships passing in the night ....

I just moved this year from NoVA to New Jersey. A bit farther from the show, too.

Regarding tables, I think Barry is right on about a) the logistical difficulties, and b) the idea of a group just getting together and getting a table being the most feasible way to do it.

Having a "forum" table for selling items is problematic for a number of reasons. First, the EAAF is not an entity in any sense, and so could not rent a table in any sort of official, or even literal, sense. Second, we at the forum take great pains to remain a "neutral" party in all respects with regard to discussing, collecting, buying, and selling ethnographic weapons. It is not within our purpose to engage in commercial activity, which implicates a number possible of legal issues as well.

I suppose it is not out of the question to design a forum-sponsored display table at the show, but again the logistics of renting, manning, etc. the table could be complicated. There has been discussion of forming an official ethnographic arms & armor society of some sort. The symposium has since its second year been presented by "The Ethnographic Arms & Armor Heritage Society, an unofficial shadow organization," and the idea has been circulating to make it an official organization (hopefully we can all discuss it a bit at the symposium this year). Such an entity would be in a much better position to set up a display table at someplace like the Baltimore show, but that would of course have to be determined by whatever eventual organization is created.

People tend to congregate at Artzi & Avner's table (Oriental Arms), or at Jimmy Manteris' or Richard Wagner's tables, during the show and to assemble for lunch. You can't miss Richard's table, not only because of the stunning display, but because he has the prime spot just inside the door. Oriental Arms is always near the beginning of the second row, readily identifiable my the tall racks of eye candy, and the large group of shady characters loitering around in front of it. Jimmy is usually a few rows further over (he's the tall guy in the straw hat).
