Ainu Sword

Doesn't look Ainu to me; they had katana-like swords, see example:

This one looks like a modern Chinese production, down to the damascus pattern of the blade and fresh garish paint of the scabbard.

The second one (ebay) is indeed chinese crap with acid etched damascus;
The first one, afaik, is real ainu sword

I WOULD AGREE THAT THE KNIFE AND THE SWORD IN THE FIRST LINK APPEAR TO BE AINU. I HAD A AINU KNIFE VERY SIMULAR TO THE ONE PICTURED THERE ITS GOOD TO SEE A PICTURE OF A SWORD EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE A PRESENTATION SWORD. THE SECOND ONE DOES INDEED LOOK LIKE NEW POORLY MADE TOURIST STUFF.

The guy bought one of thoose "masterpieces" from China and then blinded from its quality, decided to resell it on the most honourable auction house of all times.

Yes ainu people produced mainly short swords (aka wakizashi) with not verry quality blade but the fittings on thoose rarely seen pieces are adorned with a lot of motherpearl, and other ornamets, like bear claws itd...

Sorry to reopen this old thread, but I have been interested in Ainu blades for sometime so this re: line one peeked my fancy.
I currently have six Ainu blades and have seen and/or handled another 30 or so. I'm sure this is in no way Ainu-related. I'll bet this sword cane is some manner of modern "Chinoisserie" - certainly not Ainu.
I can only assume that the market for the stuff being made in China today is not very deep so that imaginative marketeers are always looking for new stories. I wonder if anyone ever bites on yarms like this
