Thank you Jose,

I am not sure about the hippo ivory, will try to take better pictures!

The blade still need more cleaning and polishing before it can be etched.

Do you know how to do this sort of binding? Someone other?

Regards,
Detlef

The pommel is attached again firmly and I have etched the blade, no twistcore! The lamination confirms nearly the engraving on the blade.
The only thing what still need to do is to blacken the binding at the handle.

Some pommel pictures. Any thoughts about the ivory origin? My guess would be hippo ivory.

Hi Ron, I am sure that I will green with envy when I will see your kris arsenal! The kris with the indo influence was shown here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...t=archaic+kris Still need to restore the handle.

Detlef

Hi Detlef - cool archaic! I agree on your observation, that the pommel looks like hippopotamus tusk.

Best wishes, - Thor

thanks for the kind words, Detlef... regarding that kris with the broken handle: i think the best way would be to tackle the problem is just to get a new pommel. recarving an addition to the existing piece might or might not bring it back to the way it was. just a thought...

Another observation/question: it is obvious that there is an inlayed strip running down the center line of the blade, is there not ?

If it won't show a pattern or signs of a twistcore then what the heck is it ???
Could it be that there is some other agent than the ones you have tried that might possibly bring out some detail in this strip ??

Hello Rick,

good observation! Could be that it is just a lamination like by this one: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...highlight=kris
But the blade will get a better polishing and an etch with an other etching agent, like you I have my doubts that this is all what this "strip" will show.

Detlef

Detlef, Rick has an excellent point. here's an archaic that at first glance is quite similar to yours. even at close inspection, it's hard to see the fact that it's twistcore. the panday did such an excellent job, that the pattern is so controlled and very tight. heck, i had a hard time taking picture of it.
you never know; you might wanna really work on that archaic of yours; you just never know what it's hiding...

Agree, my example was quite unexceptional looking before I etched it; and it took a few applications to even bring the pattern out faintly .

I used circuit board etchant .

Thank you Ron and Rick for showing your beautiful examples. I've etched the blade quickly because I was curious to see what will come out and now I have the hope that my blade can show also a twistcore.

Detlef

Detlef, when I etched my kris I only applied the etchant to the center area where the core is using a Q Tip .

Thank you Rick, very good hint! The edge area of the blade is already very dark so this is a very useful advice for me!

Detlef
