new yataghan

Found this yataghan in a quite poor and sad condition;

dirty ( most on the blade’s decorational parts at both side of the blade ),
corrosion on the blade ( especially dangerous thick on the top or end of the blade…) ,
half of one ear broken off and its metal ear cover missing....

Nevertheless still thought it to be an interesting one!

why...?

First it was a long, somewhere still nice looking and non-curved one, so with a straight blade,
secondly it had some decoration on it which at first was not clear to see on the pictures of the seller but caught my curiosity....and being no cat ….got not killed but did proceed

When it arrived , I was not disappointed as it was a rather nice one☼

although not being a fancy or "luxurious" one expensive one of a an Ottoman aristocrat, high offical/functionairy / dignitary or sr. officer in the Ottoman Empire….
as it lacked the gems stones like coral and such, nor was the decoration of that high calligraphic standard made by top craftsmen but altogether a rather nice and simple good yataghan...
decoration simple curly with text stating the year AH 1226 ( 1810/1811AD) and no Koran verses nor high title, nor the maker’s name but a simple name "Aga Musa" most likely being the owner...

One can speculate whether it was a low ranking officer of an official from a village but it still fits nice in any collection when being handled with a little love and care....

At the moment it is in process once being cleaned, restored to its original beauty ( as far as it is possible) and given back its "lacking" ear....
Will post more when completely ready but a little result is already there;
both ears present and halfway cleaned, no corrosion anymore. The little silver decoration on the gripp between the ears I did clean but left as is ( so with the tiny breaks)

Some details :

Scabbard: 63 cm, wood covered with leather and brass at the top and end
Yataghan size : 73 cm total, blade 60 cm, brass cover on the ears 5,5 cm

A very nice replacement for the Ear. I look forward to seeing what you do with the badly corroded point.

I have an Afghan Salwar Yataghan style blade with an even more deeply corroded point that I have not touched; it has been painful to look at as I have done nothing to it so *far.

I used sandpaper 600 and 3000 , just gently rubbing and some oil on your finger to finish it
