I ended up with these two pen and ink drawings. They are originals and each page is about 15X22. In the bottom corner it has the following inscription:

"Armour in England" J Starkie Gardner MacMillan Co N.Y. 1896 (not totally sure on this line) From earliest times to ... Seventeenth Century - There is a book by J Starkie Gardner with a similar name. Are these inspired by the book? Illustrations by J Starkie Gardner intended to be published in his book? The illustration style seems plausible for the period. Anyone recognize it? Would love some comments. |

Thanks. They really are well done. Such fine pen strokes. I have a hard time imagining how you can draw like this and not make a mistake. I'm decent at drawing, but I rely on the eraser quite a bit. Anyway, here are some close ups because I noticed the last ones are a little small.

You can see it starts as pencil; is perfected - no doubt with much erasure use - then carefully inked over; still needs care and attention to detail... no coffee that day for sure.

Right you are. Good eye. Still impressive to have such good control. I'm going to get these beauties framed and up on the wall in the sword room. I think it will go well. Still would love any info if anyone happens to recognize them. Still very curious if they were intended to be illustrations for a book. May just have to get my hands of a copy to see if they are in there. |
