Another thing ..
Look at the rear of the barrel behind the reinforce. About 1/3 if the diameter is unfinished. In other words, not to be seen. Suggests some sort of fitted mounting. I think that this is what led me to think "pistol". |

The profile (with the reinforce and muzzle flair) say "18th century" I think
