Yes, most probably; the type of symbols i had in a pair of fencing 'fleurets'. Still i think someone made a monster out of it ... if you don't mind me saying so .

Re-using broken blade from modern era fencing weapons has been very common ever since. Once the flexible blade is broken, the remaining parts are usually pretty stiff, and of high quality steel that will hold a vicious point. The common object is sword-cane, but also every kind of hideout dagger.
