				 | Mystery Item: Indian Scabbard

Dear forumites, I purchased this intriguing object from a modestly priced stall at some point last summer. I was drawn to it because of the quality of decoration, and obvious age. It also appealed to me because it was obviously neglected and in a pretty bad way! It has been languishing in a drawer ever since, and I hope that perhaps you can tell me a little more about it. It measures 10.75 inches in length, and 1.75 inches approx at the "mouth". It is faceted in the main body, terminating with a stylised acorn finial. I have attached several images, as they speak a thousand words, and will tell you more than my descriptive powers. I am guessing it may be Indian in origin, but that is merely a guess, and based purely on gut reaction. Any suggestions are most welcome. Kind regards, Chris |

My guess would be a khyber knife chape, probably Afghan in origin. Teodor |

Thank you Teodor. Yes, it could easily be a chape of some kind. Yes Jens, I believe it is Iron, and is magnetic. Kind regards, Chris |
