How is the "modern Damascus" made anyway ? Hand or machine ?

Radu, I believe this is machine pattern-welded. There may be a human element to the production process but I think we're looking at mechanical hammer, at least. I would guess the billets are produced by machine and the blades formed by stock removal. I'm uncertain what, if any, heat-treat these recieve.
A couple years ago, there was a company called "Shah Jahans" that was selling very similar swords and knives with this "birds-eye" pattern on eBay, and some very similar blade blanks will appear on the market from time to time. I believe some members here have had a fair amount of experience with that company's products and can comment. Personally, I've handled a few knife-sized examples with rebated edges. As I said above, I think these are pretty things. |
