Unique Madurese hilts

Nice hilts Jean. I don't believe i would consider the first one a janggelan hilt however.

Hi David,
I agree that this hilt is difficult to classify because of its peculiar design, it is probably a quite recent piece but I am not sure, any opinion about the iconography? The second one has a purely floral design, and the third one made from antler? shows eagles and fighting monkeys which are difficult to clearly see on the pictures.
And attached are 2 rare specimens of topi style hilts.

Yes, it's unusual alright. The horse and the crown or very typical Madura icons, but i can't really speak to the rest. I am sure i've seen those bundled arrows/spears at the back before, but cant place it. The main figure seems to be part horse, part bird.
I really like the one with the fighting monkeys and eagles.

Jean, I personally don't like the hilt n° 1, but the other are beautiful. The last one has a fascinating patina.

Thank you Gio, I can understand your negative appreciation about the first hilt because of the odd design. The last one is made from marine ivory I think and is very interesting because of the many symbols especially the rare Wilhem's cross.

Hmmm...we seem to be moving off the concept of "unique".

Jean has suggested to me in PM that i might consider combining this thread with a previous thread on Ornamental Madura Hilts http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showth...t=madura+hilts but i was hoping this one would become specific to the really unusual.
