It could be a family urban legend. Maybe her father was joking, but he was a coal miner in West Virginia.

From the avatar you can now see why I was wearing sunglasses with the helmet!

It is actually the ball part of the leg / hip joint. Tibetan monk, possibly Nepalese. I showed it to my chiropracter, who confirmed that it was from a human being.
