To Clean or not to Clean

Hi all,

First post. Trying to weigh the pros and cons of trying to find a conservation specialist, or attempt (slowly and gently) cleaning and conserving a couple blades that have come into my possession. Two are rapiers that I haven't been able to identify that are in dire need of cleaning, and one is what appears to be an executioner's sword. I'll post photos of the executioner's sword but need to pull out the two rapiers and photograph them so I can have photos to provide. Please excuse how green I am but trying to do what's best to preserve the history they carry. Just to give an idea, I'm thinking of using Ballistol and non-abrasive microfibers on the blade to help take some of the active rust of (while wearing gloves). Closest city is Seattle and is two plus hours away.
