Nias daggers
Here for viewing are four Nias knives (Si Euli). The top knife has an 11 inch straight blade, 18 inches overall with an open mouth naga handle. The second knife from the top has an 11 inch blade made from an old kris blade???, without a ganja. The bone handle is carved as an open mouthed demon with a monkey?? on top, also seen on Nias swords. The scabbard has carvings of the Aso, seen on Borneo swords. The scabbard is wrapped with wire down to the "foot", common on these pieces. The third from the top is a very interesting piece. It has a 10 inch straight blade with a cast bronze handle in the style of a Javanese kris handle. There is a slot in the middle of the handle and inside there appears to be some kind of small rock that can move back and forth. Must be some kind of anting-anting. The top of the scabbard also seems like an Indonesian style of scabbard. There is a chain with old hawk bells and at the bottom a brass toe piece. The bottom knife has a 10 inch blade, also probably made from a kris blade. The pommel is a very well carved demon face. Scabbard is also carved with aso figures and is wire wrapped. With the exception of the bottom piece, which I think would date from the late 40s early 50s, the rest are probably from the early 1900s...........Dave.
